Yorkshire Coast

Coast near Cloughton

Explore North Yorkshire’s beautiful Heritage Coast with its towering sea cliffs, sandy beaches and traditional seaside resorts.

Scarborough has been a seaside destination for over 100 years while the historic charm of Whitby is world famous. The elegant town of Filey boasts five miles of golden sand and is always a family favourite.

Lying between these three famous towns are some of the Yorkshire Coast’s best-kept secrets - sweeping golden bays and tiny fishing villages. Sheltered in narrow ravines and located in the North York Moors National Park, the villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes all owe their existence to the fishing industry. You can imagine the smugglers that once frequented this area as you wander round the alleyways and steep winding streets.

Enjoy fishing festivals, regattas and sea sports galore or take a walk along the Cleveland Way National Trail (North Sea Trail) which hugs the coastline. Don’t miss the fascinating fossils for which this coast is famous. You can often find fossilised sea creatures including ammonites on the beach and dinosaur footprints are clearly visible along the shores of Burniston and Scalby.
