Ilfracombe

Ilfracombe Harbour

Nestling snugly amongst the rugged cliffs on the majestic coast sits Ilfracombe, its charming natural harbour and elegant Victorian architecture continuing to make it as popular today as it has been since the 1830s. With its shops, cafes and historic maritime pubs, the bustling harbour has a continental atmosphere and fishing vessels jostle for space alongside the bobbing yachts.

Pleasure trips are always on offer during the summer season and Ilfracombe is one of the ports used by the MS Oldenburg. The town is a consistent winner of Britain in Bloom with the colourful displays brightening up the streets and sea front. The Landmark Theatre overlooks the seafront and is North Devon’s newest and finest arts and entertainment complex, offering a year round programme of events. Continually increasing in popularity is the town’s Victorian Celebration held each June, which commemorates the town’s heritage.

Walkers and nature lovers are catered for too, with the Torrs walks following the coastal footpath to Lee. These have been described as some of the finest walks in England, hence in 2004 Ilfracombe will once again be the centre for North Devon’s celebrated ‘Walking Festival’, linking in with live entertainment and the Beer Festival.
