Flooding in England: Enjoy England advice for travellers

Flooding in England: Enjoy England Advice

With parts of the country affected by the recent adverse weather conditions and flood damage, you may require information as to how this affects your travel arrangements and holiday plans. While the impact of flooding is devastating to those directly affected, we expect the effects on tourism to be quite localised. Although there is some disruption to routes to some parts of the country, there are always alternatives – don't let it put you off your holiday plans.

London

The city of London is largely unaffected although some suburban areas of outer London are affected. The London Underground is currently operating a normal service.

South West

The North Cotswolds, which includes well known places like Bourton the Water, Stow on the Wold, Burford and Chipping Campden is now fully open - full access by road and very little standing water.

Attractions are open as usual and shops and restaurants are also open. Where flood damage was inflicted last weekend there are some hotel closures, which may be up to two or three months for refurbishments. Examples of this include the Manor House at Moreton in Marsh and Washbourne Court in Lower Slaughter but nine out of 10 hotels are operating as normal so do telephone to check before discounting your options.

There is patchy, localised disruption, which is mainly in the south Cotswolds around Stroud.

Gloucester and Cheltenham do not now have flooding and are 100% accessible by road. Shops are open and, for example walking tours and farmers markets are running again. The outstanding difficulty in Gloucester and Cheltenham is water supply which has caused perhaps seven out of 10 hotels to close. Some (much fewer) hotels face longer term issues with refurbishment needed after flood damage.

The Forest of Dean was not affected by flooding and is 100% open and accessible. Unfortunately, as it is part of Gloucestershire it has been associated in media coverage with the serious problems in Gloucester and so bookings are down. A great destination and very much open!

Heart of England

There has been significant disruption to some areas in the West Midlands region, particularly the Severn Valley Railway. Despite the severe weather however, the tourist board and local visitor attractions across the region are keen to reassure holiday makers and day trippers that the area is open for business as usual.

Yorkshire

Whilst parts of Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster have been affected by flooding, this is predominantly in localised residential areas and with the clean up operation already well underway, this will not damage the overall visitor experience in Yorkshire.
