Places to stay in Dorset

Jurassic Coast

Hunt for fossils at a World Heritage Site. Walk, cycle and ride in contrasting countryside. Stretch out on the Blue Flag beaches. Opt for the bustle and entertainment of big Bournemouth or chill out in peaceful Poole. The choice is yours.

This is fossil hunting country! Look for ammonites, belemnites and even bones from ichthyosaurs which are frequently uncovered on this stretch of coast, made up entirely of rocks formed during the Jurassic period some 185 million years ago!  The beaches around Charmouth and Lyme Regis are the best places to hunt for fossils and the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, together with The Philpot Museum and Dinosaurland in Lyme Regis, give advice and run regular guided fossil-collecting walks.

If you prefer basking on beaches to poking among pebbles, then head for traditional resorts like Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Swanage where you an do all the things you like to do beside the seaside. Parade along the promenade, doze in a deckchair, join in the family fun and entertainment.
