Places to stay in Devon

Dartmoor National Park

Watch white sails scudding about on sun-dappled seas. Take bracing walks along rusty-red cliff tops. Surf on breakers and swim from safe sandy beaches. Hunt for fossils and spot wildlife. Enjoy peace and quiet or activity and excitement. It's up to you.

Begin your exploration with time spent in Exeter. Walk along the historic quayside, a buzzing area of stylish shops, cafes and restaurants; shop in the city’s many stores or visit the cool, airy cathedral. Then take a trip way back in time down on Devon’s Jurassic Coast. Hunt for fossils as you explore 185 million years’ of the earth’s history at this World Heritage Site. Wander along cliffs of rusty-red sandstone or potter about on beautiful beaches along the south coast.

Enjoy lazy days in quiet seaside towns such as Sidmouth or Exmouth or choose instead the lively buzz and activity of Torquay, with top entertainment and superb shopping as well as the sea and the sand. Adopt a penguin or a puffin on a visit to Living Coasts, an amazing world-class aquatic centre, and at nearby Greenaway, where Dame Agatha Christie wrote many of her novels, stroll around the woodland garden with lovely views over the River Dart. Buy freshly caught fish on the harbourside at Brixham or find family fun at Paignton.
