Assessed spas
The spas industry has developed rapidly in this country over the last five years and the high street is awash with beauty salons, spa products and health shops. Places like Bath can trace their spa heritage back to 863BC, when bathing in the mineral enriched mud was found to help cure certain ailments. It has been estimated that in the UK, the industry is quoted as being worth £1.4 billion per annum with 20 new spas opening each week.
As spas are part of the fast moving and growing health, wellness and pampering industry, quality is an important part of the success, both of the industry and individual businesses within it. The raising of standards is crucial to the future development of English ‘health and wellness’ tourism and in creating a high quality consumer experience for you.
To achieve a quality product all elements of the spa must meet or exceed client expectations and it is for this reason that VisitBritain has put together an accreditation scheme for spas. This involves a mystery shopper both visiting the spa, checking out the brochure and website and making a series of telephone calls to see how a customer would be dealt with. So be reassured that those who have been accredited meet some tough standards in terms of quality, cleanliness and service as well as health and safety standards.
Designators have been developed to help consumers understand the different types of spa available. All spas will be positioned in one of the following descriptive designators. The spa operator will have the choice providing that the spa meets the description for that designator:
