It is still over a year until Liverpool is thrust into Europe’s cultural spotlight, but the city already boasts an enviable programme of world-class events and festivals. Liverpool is getting ready for European Capital of Culture 2008 with a series of action-packed themed years, highlighting the unique character that makes Liverpool such a fantastic place to visit.

2006 – Liverpool Performs: 2006 celebrates Liverpool's amazing track record in performance, from the stage to the gallery to the field. Highlights include the 4th Liverpool Biennial and the British Open Golf Championship, returning to Hoylake for the first time in 38 years.

Liverpool Performs will bring together the Arts, Sport and Business, offering opportunities for showcasing, spectating, and engagement through participation.

2007 – Liverpool’s 800th: It’s Happy Birthday Liverpool as the city celebrates eight centuries of history. The year will reflect on Liverpool’s illustrious past, while looking forward to a bright future as one of the world’s great cities. 

2008 – European Capital of Culture: Preparations for Liverpool’s big year are well under way. Here’s just a taster of what you can expect in 08...

• A stunning artistic programme led by world-renowned artistic director, Robyn Archer.
• The 07/08 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race reaching a spectacular climax at the Pier Head.
• The start of the 2008 Tall Ships’ Race, featuring more than 100 magnificent Tall Ships.

• The start of the 2008 Tall Ships’ Race, featuring more than 100 magnificent Tall Ships.
• The return of Sir Simon Rattle – currently chief conductor and artistic director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra – to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. 
• The British Open Golf Championships at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Sefton. 

2009 –Year of Environment: After the spectacular celebrations of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year, 2009 will focus on the city’s parks, waterfront and natural heritage.

2010 – Year of Innovation: Liverpool’s final themed year will commemorate the city’s writers, directors, designers and entrepreneurs.
