Hidden Britain

Some of England’s best kept secrets are in the countryside

Hidden Britain

When you visit a Hidden Britain Centre you will experience the small pleasures of real country life, all created by the local community.

Inspiration to take you off the tourist trail

Hidden Britain aims to guide you to Britain’s many beautiful and extraordinary, undiscovered places, off the tourist trail.

Hidden Britain helps rural communities to boost the local area through small-scale tourism projects to attract visitors. The scheme’s newly-launched website (hidden-britain.co.uk) introduces you to undiscovered parts of beautiful Britain, and allows you to find Enjoy England quality assured accommodation before you set off.

When you visit a Hidden Britain centre you will experience the small pleasures of real country life, all created by the local community. Each centre has its own stories to tell; stories you might discover by joining in the fun at a town festival, poking around an historic church or settling in by the fire at the local pub for a hearty meal and some good conversation.

Typically our locations are in lesser-known areas of the countryside: maybe a single town (like Winchelsea in East Sussex) or the entire Swansea to Shrewsbury ‘Heart of Wales’ railway line. But all have been left to speak for themselves, unspoilt, waiting for you to discover them.

Support regeneration at local level

The Hidden Britain project was piloted in Cumbria from 2002-2004. Today the national project has some 30 centres in counties from Kent to Cumbria.

Each has developed its own way to share its story with visitors, appropriate to the area and its needs. Hidden Britain has helped each with advice, support in the search for funding, national branding and marketing, and the fellowship of other centres.

Just by visiting a Hidden Britain centre, you will also be doing your bit to support the Hidden Britain project to regenerate these small areas of the countryside at local level.

The result is a more meaningful, authentic and individual experience.
