International Bognor Birdman, Seafront Pier, Bognor
The International Bognor Birdman is a splendid example of human beings defying their natural state by swooping off Bognor Pier...and crashing inelegantly into the sea. The £25,000 prize money for the person that manages the longest distance beyond 100 metres is not the sole incentive for those who attend the event from all over the world each year. There's also the exhilaration of achieving a bird-like state of Nirvana for those crucial seconds, watched by a crowd of thousands, not to mention the chance to make their name with a spectacular performance in front of the media crews from around the world who regularly attend. The competition also hopes to raise in excess of £70,000 for worthwhile causes. www.birdman.org.uk
