Saving the best till last, the fabulously entertaining Bestival (7-9 September) wraps up the summer with a first-class line up that includes the Beastie Boys, the Chemical Brothers and Primal Scream.
This hugely popular ‘boutique’ style festival which takes place over three days in the stunning leafy Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight, features around 400 performances to a crowd of up to 40,000 people. The brain-child of Radio 1 DJ supreme Rob da Bank, the music is spread over eight stages and includes local talent.
While you’re there, find the healing field to massage away those aching camping bones, join the world’s biggest fancy dress procession or get married in the inflatable church!
Stop by Dimbola Lodge in the coastal setting of Freshwater Bay to check out the ‘The Isle of Wight Pop Festivals Past and Present’ exhibition. This unique exhibition showcases rare posters, programmes, press cuttings, tickets and photographs of the music and the crowds of the iconic Isle of Wight Festivals.
The Isle of Wight Festivals of 1968, 1969 and 1970 were a product of their times. Never before had the UK and more particularly, this small Island just off the south coast of England, seen anything like it. It was before the days of packaged pop idols when in 1970 Jimi Hendrix made hasty sewing repairs to his clothes before announcing ‘Hello, England’ to a sea of over half a million faces. This was pop history in the making and the likes of Bob Dylan, The Doors, Procol Harum, Janis Joplin and the Who strutted their stuff. It was also the last live performance that Jimi Hendrix would ever give.
Dimbola Lodge is a photographic museum devoted to the work of famous Victorian photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron who photographed the celebrities of her time, including Charles Dickens and Alfred Lord Tennyson. A life-sized bronze statue of the legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix, sculpted by John Swindells, is now in situ in the specially prepared section of the gardens at Dimbola Lodge.
