Discover wildlife in England - South West

South West

Rich in wildlife, each of the counties in the South West has an active Wildlife Trust.  The landscape is peppered with Nature Reserves and there are almost 20 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The woodlands, moors, rivers and heathland support a range of wildlife including badgers, dormouse, deer (red & roe) and otters, while the coasts and seas of the region are important for a diverse range of plant and animal species; many of which are only found in the British Isles around the South West.

The mild waters of the region support a number of rare corals and seaweeds; small numbers of grey seals breed in caves; and the waters off the north coast of Devon and Cornwall have some of the most whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks in Britain.  There are also frequent sightings of marine turtles off Land’s End.
