The West Midlands is an intriguing mix of urban areas and delightful unspoilt countryside of much variety and charm. There are surprisingly extensive tracts of open moorland and hills, as well as picturesque villages, grand country houses and some notable gardens.

Where to go and what to see

Symonds Yat, Gloucestershire
Wild Peregines have long been associated with Symonds Yat Rock. The Peregrine Viewing Point is a partnership project run by the Forestry Commission and the RSPB. During the breeding season (April to August), powerful telescopes enable visitors to see right into the birds’ nests!

Tittesworth Reservoir – Staffordshire
In excess of 200 bird species have been recorded at Tittesworth. The site has become well known as a stopover point for migrating ospreys. It is also a good site for winter thrushes, Fieldfare and Redwing, often topping 400 for each species.

Britain's first Monkey Forest has just opened its doors to humans. Based at Trentham – the multi-activity attraction will cover 60 of the estate's 750 acres. Members of the public can pay to stroll through a section of the Monkey Forest (£5 adults, £3.50 children).
