This trail is a delightful mixture of rolling chalk wolds with large airy field tops and dramatic dry valleys. Trace the footsteps of the legendary highway man Dick Turpin or enjoy views of the Humber Bridge, the parkland at Londesborough Estate, or the dry valleys and villages on route such as Wharram Percy and Filey Brigg.
The Trail Officer's favourite part of the route is "Fridaythorpe to Thixendale and Wharram Percy for the sense of freedom and big skies.”
The Wolds Way is chalk country, dominated nearly all the way by the crest of the chalk escarpment, which runs first north from the Humber and then east, to terminate abruptly in the 400ft cliffs of Bempton. The scarp face (to the west and north overlooking the Vales of York and Pickering) is generally too steep for arable farming and, therefore, mainly woodland or rough grazing.
