The Cleveland Way

Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way is 109 miles / 176 Kilometres of ever changing and beautiful landscapes and scenery. The Cleveland Way was opened in 1969, the second National Trail in England and Wales. The route follows a horseshoe line of great variety around much of the beautiful North York Moors National Park. Starting from the attractive market town of Helmsley, the Cleveland Way heads across the inspirational, and sometimes vibrant heather moorland of the North York Moors, before reaching the coast at Saltburn. From here it’s a visual feast along the dramatic North Yorkshire coastline to Filey, passing old fishing villages and lively coastal towns. This Trail crosses England’s North Country at its most spectacular, with sights, sounds and scents that will stay with you forever. The Cleveland Way is also a path through history – castles and abbeys stand as sturdy testaments to the Yorkshire character. Towns and villages, each with their own distinctive character, wait to be explored and heritage sites beckon.

Highlights

Roseberry Topping: Also known as “Yorkshire’s Matterhorn”, its 320m summit provides an all round vista from the coast and Teeside in one direction, to the Dales in the other. The area is rich in wildlife, including many species of moorland birds.

Whitby Abbey: Always a favourite stop-off, an amazing new visitor centre now adds another dimension to the interpretation of this historic and beautifully set monument.
