The Cleveland Way

Cleveland Way

Walking in Yorkshire takes you to an elemental place, shaped by the forces of nature. The soft chalk in the Yorkshire Wolds has been moulded into a subtle, seductive landscape of rich, fertile farmlands quite unlike anywhere else in Britain.

Up in the North York Moors you'll feel as if you're walking on air, not heather, when you stride out into those refreshing open spaces set beneath large open skies. The Cleveland Way is 109 miles / 176 Kilometres of ever changing and beautiful landscapes and scenery. The route follows a horseshoe line of great variety around much of this beautiful landscape.

Starting from the attractive market town of Helmsley, the Cleveland Way heads across the inspirational, and sometimes vibrant heather moorland of the North York Moors, before reaching the coast at Saltburn. From here it’s a visual feast along the dramatic North Yorkshire coastline to Filey, passing old fishing villages and lively coastal towns.

This Trail crosses England’s North Country at its most spectacular, with sights, sounds and scents that will stay with you forever. The Cleveland Way is also a path through history – castles and abbeys stand as sturdy testaments to the Yorkshire character. Towns and villages, each with their own distinctive character, wait to be explored and heritage sites beckon.
