Rugby, Warwickshire

The Oxford Canal runs close to Rugby town centre and through many of the borough's villages. These include the village of Newbold where there is a short 250 yard tunnel, through which the towpath continues through allowing walkers a unique experience.

Hillmorton, near Rugby, is home to an unusual lock flight with three pairs of narrow locks. Originally there were only three narrow locks here, but during the North Oxford Canal Modernisation Programme, another lock was constructed alongside each of the existing locks to increase the number of boat movements possible at this flight.

In 2001, craft workshops were built beside Hillmorton locks, alongside the British Waterways Waterway Conservation and Regeneration centre. This has brought new life to this attractive site, once an important canal wharf.
