Norfolk Broads
In 1907 Harry Blake considered the Norfolk Broads to be so special that they inspired him to set up the Blakes booking agency to enable more people to enjoy holidays afloat. A century later the boats may have changed, but the network of rivers and lakes which make up the Norfolk Broads, remain a popular holiday destination for thousands of visitors each year.
For those new to boating the Broads are ideal, with over 200km of gentle, lock-free waterways to explore with an abundance of wildlife, a wide variety of places to visit, picturesque villages and historic windmills, the busy city of Norwich and the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth. With a protected status similar to a National Park, the Broads are a paradise for anglers and nature lovers; watch carefully and you may spot a marsh harrier gliding over the water meadows, or the rare swallowtail butterfly – unique to this region.
Children will enjoy a visit to the ever-popular Great Yarmouth with its sandy beaches and seaside attractions, or Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park outside Lowestoft. New for 2007 is Bewilderwood (www.bewilderwood.co.uk/), a ‘Curious Treehouse Adventure’ situated between Wroxham and Horning and opening on 21st May 2007; Bewilderwood has been described by the Observer as “One of the 50 most fabulous things to do in the world”. For a more adventurous family bonding exercise why not try a sailing yacht? Blakes can arrange RYA courses for novices and you’ll soon be sailing like experts – perfect experience if you’ve ever contemplated a family flotilla holiday in the Mediterranean!
Choose from a wide range of VisitBritain graded cruisers, or our fleet of sailing yachts, and experience the delights of this enchanting region for yourself; what could be more peaceful than to drop your anchor at dusk in the middle of a Broad, with only the gentle lap of the water and the twinkling of distant village lights for company? As Harry Blake said in 1916 ‘A week’s holiday on these waters is worth a month elsewhere’.
