Romantic film locations

Romantic Film Chatsworth

With its remarkable heritage and unique landscapes, England’s countryside and cities have provided an array of enchanting and romantic backdrops for numerous film productions over the years.

As times go by

Fans of Emma Thompson will not be disappointed with the number of locations in the South West featured in films starring this famous English actress. Shot at various settings, including Montacute House in Somerset, Wilton House in Wiltshire and Sailsbury's Cathedral Close, the South West lent itself perfectly to Ang Lee's award winning adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.

Dyrham Park near Bath, Corsham Court near Chippenham, Powderham Castle near Exeter and Gloucesterhsire's Badminton House were all used to create Darlington Hall, the focus of James Ivory's Remains of the Day. This film stars Anthony Hopkins as the perfectionist butler and Emma Thompson as his housekeeper, Miss Kenton.

Classic inspiration

Gentle classic inspiration can be found at Holkham (www.holkham.co.uk) in Norfolk, where scenes for Shakespeare in Love were filmed. The beautiful beach at Holkham was used for the scene when heroine Gwyneth Paltrow is cast ashore on a desert island, and the nearby lake at Holkham Hall is the backdrop for the scene where Viola declares her love for Will.

Scenic settings

Thanks to the enduring popularity of Pride & Prejudice, many parts of the East Midlands are etched indelibly on the minds of big-screen and small-screen viewers alike. In the recent blockbuster movie starring Keira Knightley, Derbyshire's Chatsworth (www.chatsworth.org/) becomes Pemberley, and Burghley House (www.burghley.co.uk) in Lincolnshire becomes Rosings, while the Peak District provides some of the movie's most spectacular back-drops.
