Titus Salt (1803-1876)

Titus Salt

Born in Bradford, this manufacturer and inventor started wool spinning in 1834, devising machinery for making worsted from coarse Russian wool.  He also discovered a method of manufacturing alpaca and in 1853 he opened the model manufacturing village of Saltaire near his large mill beside the River Aire.  His village had almshouses for the elderly, a hospital, a school, an institute and a church.
