Sir Charles Wheatstone
Born at Barnwood Manor House, near Gloucester, Wheatstone is best known for inventing the electric telegraph and he was knighted for his work in laying the first transatlantic telephone cable.  But his first interest was music and he produced the ‘flute harmonique’ instrument when he was 16 before developing the concertina and microphone.
