Lancelot 'Capability' Brown (1716-1783)
Brown, who created the wonderful landscapes of many of England's great estates, was born at Kirkharle in Northumberland. He earned his nickname from his habit of describing the potential for landscaping parks as capabilities, rather than opportunites. You can admire his incredible talent at historic houses and gardens throughout England.
