John Dalton

A chemist and physicist, Dalton was born into a modest Quaker family in Cumberland. He developed the atomic theory of matter and is one of the fathers of modern physical science. His pioneering atomic theory (1803) was the precursor of all modern chemistry, whilst his meteorology lectures turned the study of weather into a science.
