Historic England - James Sumner
James Sumner (1860-1924)
Sumner started work in his father’s blacksmithing business in Leyland, Lancashire, then became fascinated by steam power and was able to indulge his passion for motorised transport. He produced a five-ton steam wagon in the early 1880s, moved on to a steam-powered tricycle and lawnmower and eventually became a founder of what was one of England’s largest companies, Leyland Motors.
