James Brindley

Brindley was born in Derbyshire and was the mastermind behind Britain's canal network, revolutionising transport for the industrial heartlands. Brindleyplace, in the centre of Birmingham, is dedicated to his memory and his contribution to the city's canal network.

Visit the working flourmill built by Brindley in 1752 and find out more about him in the small museum.

Feel the buzz as you stroll along the canalside, join busy shoppers, or sip your drink al fresco outside the many bars and cafes in this lively part of the city. Enjoy dinner in one of Brindleyplace’s restaurants, take afternoon tea on a traditional narrowboat moored on the canal or jump on board a boat for a day trip afloat.
