Charles Stewart Rolls & Sir Frederick Henry Royce

Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce

The great aviation and motoring pioneer Charles Stewart Rolls was born in London and started selling cars in 1902.  Two years later after meeting Frederick Royce at the Midland Hotel in Manchester, the Rolls-Royce company was formed.
Born in the village of Alwalton, near Peterborough, Royce was an apprentice on the Great North Railway and later worked in London and Liverpool before setting up business in Manchester when he was 21. The first Royce made its maiden voyage from here to Knutsford, 15 miles away, on 1st April 1904. In 1906 they created the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, one of the world’s best-loved cars.
