Charles Parsons (1854-1931)
Parsons developed the steam turbine in 1884, which revolutionised the generating of electricity and the means of powering ships. He also built the world’s first turbine-powered vessel in 1894, created as an experimental vessel to test and demonstrate the advantages of steam turbines. Turbinia was once the fastest vessel on water, capable of travelling at speeds of up to 34.5 knots.
