Charles Babbage (1791-1871)

Charles Babbage
Although born in London, this mathematician, computer pioneer, economist, mechanical engineer and inventor came from a Devon background and went to school in Alphington, Exeter. While at Cambridge University, Babbage and friends transformed mathematics with the introduction of the Leibnitz notation for the calculus but his greatest achievement was his plans for Difference Engines and Analytical Engines, mechanical calculating machines considered forerunners of the modern computer.
