Admire works by great British names

Tate Britain (www.tate.org.uk/britain/) at Millbank, London is nevertheless a great place to start. Admire works by great British names such as Blake, Constable, Gainsborough, Hirst, Hockney and Turner. Dip in at the year 1500 - and work your way up to the present day.

A modern affair

Tate Modern (www.tate.org.uk/), in the capital’s former Bankside power station, is an altogether more modern affair. See major works by Picasso, Dalí, Matisse and Warhol - amongst others.

Contemporary art

For the largest collection of modern and contemporary art outside London head to Merseyside. It’s where you’ll find Tate Liverpool (www.tate.org.uk/liverpool/) - in a beautiful converted warehouse in the historic Albert Dock.

Modern art

St Ives’ transformation from artists' colony to abstract avant-garde outpost began in 1928. Its very own Tate St Ives (www.enjoyengland.com/Attraction/St-Ives/Gallery/134315/Tate-St-Ives.htm) opened 20 years ago. Enjoy modern art in the surroundings and atmosphere that inspired them.

Tate in space

Tate in Space (www.tate.org.uk/space/) constitutes the most recent - and radical - addition to the Tate's locations. Using satellite and web technology, it quite literally breaks new ground.
