The Beach at Walberswick

The Beach at Walberswick

Philip Steer, ca. 1889

Over a thousand acres of heath and marshland around Walberswick in Suffolk are protected as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Steer painted the beach there many times. His paintings are fluidly painted and concentrate upon effects of atmosphere and light, but, unlike the Impressionist Monet, Steer was still as interested in the figures as their setting.
