The Vale of the White Horse

The Vale of the White Horse

Eric Ravilious, c. 1939

The White Horse of Uffington, with its elegant lines of white chalk bedrock, is thought to be the oldest hill figure in Britain, dating back to about 1400BC. Eric Ravilious often painted the  downland and coast of southern England and his depiction of the countryside in the rain is familiar.
