The Hold House Port Mear Square Island, Port Mear Beach

The Hold House Port Mear Square Island, Port Mear Beach

Alfred Wallis, c. 1932

St Ives, Cornwall became a magnet for artists following the extension to West Cornwall of the Great Western Railway in 1877. This painting shows the promontory known as ‘The Island’, part of Porthmeor Beach and Porthmeor Square - local painter Alfred Wallis painted this picture on the back of a printed advertisement for an exhibition in the town.
