Newcastle-on-Tyne
JMW Turner, c. 1823
The river Tyne can be seen in this watercolour, with Newcastle on the right bank and Gateshead on the left. Besides Newcastle's Norman castle and lofty All Saints Church, the painting preserves two vanished landmarks: the Tyne Bridge, which was demolished in 1772 and St Mary's Church, Gateshead, which was destroyed by fire in 1979.
