Flatford Mill (Scene on a Navigable River)

Flatford Mill (Scene on a Navigable River)

John Constable, 1816-17

Constable's father owned this watermill for grinding corn in Flatford. The mill and several surrounding buildings are now in the care of the National Trust. While Flatford Mill itself is not open to the public, the nearby sixteenth-century Bridge Cottage houses an exhibition on John Constable. His paintings of this part of the river Stour have become so famous that this area of Suffolk is now known as Constable Country. The current landscape retains its natural beauty and it is easy to locate the sites of many of his major paintings.
