Creswell Crags, Derbyshire

Creswell Crags, Derbyshire

Samuel Hieronymous Grimm, 1785

The caves and gorges of Creswell Crags lie on the border of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Stone tool and remains of animals found in the caves by archaeologists provides evidence for a fascinating story of life during the last Ice Age between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago, and cave art from the ice age has recently been discovered there.  This watercolour features the striking ravine of limestone cliffs which were almost inaccessible to the eighteenth-century traveller. Grimm worked it up from drawings made on one of his visits to his patron at Barlborough Hall near Chesterfield.
