The Cornfield

The Cornfield

John Nash, 1918

This painting is set in in Chalfont Common in Buckinghamshire, an area well loved for country walks between picturesque villages with a host of welcoming country pubs along the way. John Nash was an official war artist, and this was his first painting that didn’t depict war. He often used to paint late in the day when his official work was over for the day, hence the long shadows cast by the evening sun across the field.
