Cornard Wood
Thomas Gainsborough, 1748
Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk. While portraiture was his profession he often said landscape painting was his real pleasure. The realism of this picture of Cornard Wood is striking. We can see the hillside at Abbas Hall, above Great Cornard, looking south-west towards another village, Great Henny, whose church of St Mary’s appears in the background.
