Morning amongst the Coniston Fells, Cumberland
JMW Turner, c. 1798
The mountain is Coniston Old Man in Cumbria, which rises dramatically to 2635 feet. Turner's visit to the North in 1797 included Yorkshire, lancashire, Durham and Northumberland and the Borders region of Scotland as well as the Lake District, in an itinerary that was fast becoming the new Grand Tour for artists.
