Coalbrookdale by Night
Philip James De Louthebourg, 1801
Coalbrookdale, famous as the birthplace of eighteenth century industrialisation, had more furnaces and forges along two miles of riverbank than anywhere else in the world. This oil painting shows the Bedlam Furnaces along the river Severn at night, silhouetted against the fiery glow of a furnace being tapped.
