Painted during the early part of the First World War, a party of Vaudeville entertainers perform on the Brighton seafront. The gunfire of the Western Front could sometimes be heard along the south coast of England, and many of the deckchairs in the painting are empty, hinting at the absence of the men who have gone off to fight in the war.
