Iconic architecture

Ironbridge Architecture

The genius of the Heart of England region is reflected in its architecture. Ironbridge, the RSC and new Bullring are all examples of iconic architecture seen throughout the region.

At the heart of progress

Ironbridge (www.ironbridge.org.uk/) is known throughout the world as the symbol of the Industrial Revolution. It contains all the elements of progress that contributed to the rapid development of this industrial region in the 18th century. The bridge at Ironbridge, the world's first bridge constructed of iron, had a considerable influence on developments in the fields of technology and architecture.

Moving on in time, the RSC Theatre (www.rsc.org.uk) in Stratford-on-Avon is one of the most famous theatres in the world. The 1932 art deco redbrick theatre is unique in 20th-century British architecture as the only substantial public building designed by a woman, Elizabeth Scott.

Modern classics

More modern iconic architecture can be found at Bullring Birmingham (www.bullring.co.uk) which continues the city's historic street pattern through design. Designed on three axes, Bullring restores historic linkages to the city's traditional markets. Designed by concept architects Benoy, Bullring has been conceived as a series of malls, open spaces, covered 'streets' and public piazzas, with Selfridges futuristic store design already becoming an iconic symbol representing Birmingham.

Two cathedrals on one site dedicated to peace

The site of the old and new Cathedrals in Coventry is another piece of iconic architecture to be found in the region. The original Cathedral was devastated in WWII and the decision to rebuild it was taken the morning after its destruction, not as an act of defiance, but rather a sign of faith, trust and hope for the future of the world.

Coloured light streams through John Piper's Baptistry window and Epstein's St Michael and the Devil guards the cathedral steps. The ruins of the old structure remain hallowed ground and together the two create one living Cathedral.

As one of the finest medieval Cathedrals in the country, Lichfield Cathedral (www.lichfield-cathedral.org/) is the only one with three spires. The original Cathedral was dedicated on Christmas Day in the year AD 700 The present building was started in 1195, and completed by the building of the Lady Chapel in the 1330s.
