It's what afternoons were made for, according to London's glitzy Ritz Hotel, and their invitation to tea is one that few will forget in a hurry. Smart clothes are necessary (jeans just won't do, and men should wear a jacket and tie), and so is booking up to three months in advance, slightly less during the week. The spectacular Palm Court makes an elegant setting for the well-dressed diners, and serves a tea to match: finely cut sandwiches without a crust in sight, freshly-baked scones with jam and clotted cream, delicate pastries and a choice of seven varieties of tea, at a Ritzy price of around £60 for two. Champagne is extra.
