Claris's

A 15th-century weaver's cottage in one of England’s most unspoilt villages is the setting for a flourishing tea room and gift shop. Collectors of such diverse objects as fine pottery and Steiff teddy bears are drawn to this Aladdin’s cave of treasures, found in the half-timbered High Street of what was once the centre of the cloth trade. Behind the windows filled temptingly with Moorcroft pottery, lamps, glassware, enamels and soft toys, the tea shop itself exudes charm. The low oak beams and inglenook fireplace, and spacious tables covered in lace, are outdone in appeal only by the delicious food served here. Huge light meringues are a house speciality, but equally irresistible are the wonderful walnut bread, lemon Madeira, almond slice and coffee walnut cake. Cream teas come with a rich choice of brews, and there are also soups and sandwiches, or snacks such as creamed mushrooms on toast. Janet and Brian Wingham are thoughtful and welcoming hosts, and their obvious love of their tea shop is contagious.
