Established in 1986. Seats 72. One look at M and S Rahman’s venue tells you that it is likely to be good. Along its three-shop frontage is a white fascia, supported by 12 pillars, above each of which resides an attractive uplighter resembling an ice cream cone. Between each light is a small canopy that crowns each of the tinted, partially-curtained windows below, beyond which one can see an inviting restaurant scene. There’s a smart lounge complete with leather Chesterfields, and the restaurant, in three rooms, with equally impressive leather-backed chairs. Several regulars have remarked that the prices, though a little high, have hardly varied in several years, indeed we can confirm that they are the same now as in 1998. Starter specialities include: Dahi Begoon with Puri, finely spiced aubergine with onions and topped with plain yoghurt, served on a puri; Fish Kofta, delicately spiced minced trout kebabs. Also, the imaginative use of wine is rare in Indian restaurants and, done well as it is here by owner-chef M Rahman, it gives traditional dishes an unexpected and subtle lift.
