Beer and pubs

Pub

A pint of beer is a curious thing. To the untrained eye and unseasoned pallet it might be nothing more than a simple prop for a good night out, a helping hand to ease away the working week. But to the aficionado a pint of beer is truly an experience to savour. What most people don’t appreciate is the sheer diversity of beers and ales that are brewed throughout England.

From bitters and stouts to porter and milds, the Campaign for Real Ale’s Mike Benner separates the hops from the barley and gives us his guide to beer styles.

Knowing what to drink is one thing, but finding the perfect environment to drink in is another. Check out our regional A-Z of historic pubs located throughout England, from the Old George Inn in Northumbria to the Chequers Inn in the South East.
