Reputed to be the oldest pub in England by The Times, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks dates back to the 8th Century.

The pub you can see today was built in the 11th Century and original features can still be seen by visitors.  In fact the pub still has the original fireplace with a bread oven to the side.

St Albans Cathedral and grounds are just across the road from the Fighting Cocks and there are tunnels stretching from the beer cellar to the Cathedral, apparently used by Monks.

Cock fighting took place in the main bar in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hence the name of the pub.

With its long history Ye Olde Fighting Cocks could tell a few stories!  It is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the pub and interestingly it is thought that the cock pit - about 8ft wide and 10ft long - was brought down from the Cathedral, although why is still a mystery!

Ales and Malts

The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks serves an excellent range of three regular and two cask ales including Old Speckled Hen, Bombardier and 6X.  It also offers fine malt whiskeys and a selection of white and red wines from the wine menu.

Food

The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks serves traditional British pub food including its famous Steak Pie, which is a favourite amongst customers. If you’re looking for something lighter, there is also a great range of Snacks and Hot & Cold Sandwiches.
