The Victoria Hotel has been rated one of the top ten venues for food and is centrally located in Leeds, and close the Royal Armoury.
The Victoria Hotel was built in 1865 to accommodate people attending the newly-opened assizes court at Leeds Town Hall, immediately opposite.
In 1973 “The Vic” survived redevelopment plans for the city centre area. When the public learned that The Vic could come down, a 1000 signature petition to save it was compiled, from clients both past and present, from this country and all over the world, which proved to be successful.
The Victoria was given a new look in the 1980s, with a sign dating back to the turn of the century. Regulars thought that the sign had been newly constructed as part of the facelift operation. In fact the sign is originally Victorian, dating back to the 1980s. The sign was found by workmen in its’ original position, covered by boards after being slightly damaged in a fire. The sign was sent for restoration, golf leaf being used for the lettering, the solid mahogany base being restored and the whole sign was then covered in glass.
In 1989 The Vic was chosen by Leeds Civic Trust to be given special recognition for “Its splendid Victorian features and contribution to city life”. A heritage plaque was subsequently unveiled.
