The Three Pigeons has been used for various activity since 1st June 1646, but principally as an Inn from 1755. It is a traditional English pub, which dates back to 1755. Situated near the castle it includes Lewis Carroll amongst its famous visitors.
Over the years the Three Pigeons was extended and it incorporated part of the Nag’s Head Inn, which adjoined it.
In 1916 the Three Pigeons was severely damaged by fire. It was rebuilt in the style of the original seventeenth century building with a mock Jacobean front, and today is a listed building in the Conservation area of the High Street.
Thomas White, who owned the Bridge brewery, advertised the Three Pigeons in a Trade Directory of 1874 as:
“Thomas White - Brewer, Maltster and Spirit Marchant - begs to inform the Gentry and Public generally that he has a large and well selected stock of Spirits and Wines at reasonable prices. T.W. begs to call special attention to his home-brewed Beer, Ale and Stout. Having recently made great additions to his brewery, he is now enabled to supply families with large or small casks in prime condition. The family Bitter Ale at 1s. and the Stout at 1/4d per gallon can be strongly recommended.”
Ales and Malts
The Three Pigeons offers a good range of cask ales such as London Pride and Bass as well as serving a guest ale each week and the malt whiskey Glenfiddich. The Three Pigeons also has a fine selection of red and white wines, offering four of each.
