Situated on Stonegate, one of the most beautiful and oldest streets in the country, the Punch Bowl has been a pub for over 300 years.
The Punch Bowl has had two major fires in the last 150 years, however restoration work has retained the tavern’s distinctive character. In the 1930s, some restoration was undertaken after one of the fires. The overhanging gable at the front of the pub was added and has been thoughtfully crafted to echo the character of the street - a style sometimes called Brewers Tudor.
The Punch Bowl has a strong historical connection with the reforming Whig party. Throughout the country, towards the late 17th Century, the Punch Bowl design was politically associated with this party, and visitors to any town would have frequently visited such pubs knowing that the locals would be from the same political persuasion. Here they could drink with their fellows, propose political toasts and sing their party’s songs without fear of recrimination from other drinkers. Punch itself was the preferred drink of the Whigs, whilst the Tories liked their claret.
York is one of the most haunted cities in England and the Punch Bowl can claim at least two ghosts. One is that of a 19th Century landlord who perished in a fire. The other is that of a poor girl who was murdered here.
