The Pump House is set in the heart of the beautiful Brighton Lanes on Market Street and is named after the original timber-framed Pump House.
In the early 19th Century, when there was no promenade and the beach was further inland, there was a small jetty and on it sat a wooden hut, which housed a hand-operated pump. This was used to pump sea water ashore to nearby bars and was situated between Market and East streets.
The Pump House is one of the oldest buildings in Brighton - the actual date of the existing property is uncertain, but a stone fireplace still present in the bar bears the initials of Miss Elliot who bought the building in 1766.
The cellars of this building date from medieval England and still retain the original flint foundations, as do most of the old buildings in the Lanes.
Ales and Malts
The Pump House stocks an excellent range of regular cask ales including; London Pride and Bass and one guest ale, as well as two malt whiskeys - Glenfiddich and Glenmorangie. Customers can also chose from the wine menu, which includes three red and six white wine choices.
Food
The Pump House serves traditional pub food - the menu contains the delicious Pump House Steak Pie, which is served with chips and vegetables, as well as lighter favourites such as Chicken & Bacon Salad. A range of seasonal specials are also offered.
