The Palace is an award-winning pub, famed for its fine selection of cask ales and also its spooky visitors!
The Palace was originally the home of a Leeds Timber merchant, Edmund Maude, and dates back to approximately 1741. It was first recorded as an inn in 1841. Behind the Palace is the Aire & Calder Navigation, built between 1699 and 1826, giving a direct link to the Humber and North Sea. Upstream at the next lock is the Leeds Liverpool Canal, built between 1770 and 1816 and giving a direct link to Liverpool and the Irish Sea. Henry Teal, who followed Edmund Maude as landlord, built boats behind the pub.
In 1874 The Palace passed to the Castelow family, who brewed their own beer and extended the building to take in an adjacent cottage and pawnbrokers. Their grave can be found across the road in the right hand corner of the cemetery.
The pub is said to be haunted by a grey apparition, supposedly of a lady, but it could be the ghost of the actor, singer, poet and entertainer, Michael Hall, who died here in 1848 aged 41.
The Palace was bought by the Melbourne Brewery in 1926, hence the name on the wall facing the church.
Ales and Malts
The Palace stocks an excellent range of cask ales including; Tetley’s, Bass, Burton and Dark Ale and six guest ales, as well the malt whiskeys Glenfiddich and Glenmorganie. The Palace also has a fine selection of red and white wines, offering four of each.
