Close to the Headingley cricket ground The Original Oak has been serving the community of Headingley and Leeds student population for over 150 years.

The pub is named after the famous Shire Oak that stood in the grounds for over 1500 years. Having started its life as a sapling when Roman soldiers were garrisoned in the fort at Adel, the Oak became a focal point under which meetings were held and great decisions made. The acorn from which it grew either fell or was deliberately planted around the year AD300. It would have reached maturity about 200 years later.

In Roman times, the Oak tree was the center of activity for the area.  Later ‘Wapentake’ affairs were conducted at ‘The Oak’.  King Alfred introduced ‘Wapentakes’ which were local Government areas and now commonly known as ‘Boroughs’.

The oak tree continued growing and stayed in giant maturity for hundreds of years before its slow decline into old age 800 years ago.  ‘The Oak’ finally collapsed on 26th May 1941 and has since been replaced by a new sapling close to the original site – found between the pub and the bank.

The Original Oak is one of Leeds best-known meeting places. It maintains long established links with the students of Leeds' universities and has forged strong associations with local cricket and rugby clubs.
